December 2023
This has been one of the fastest years yet for me! As you grow older the years do go by faster, but this one went by too fast. Looking back, I graduated on Saturday, May 19, 1976, from the Citadel, and early that next Monday morning I was starting my first job for $5 an hour working under my father. I have come a long way since then!
2023 has proven to be a remarkable year for IEC National and we are so proud to share some highlights:
  • Developing a new curriculum to propel us forward in the industry, particularly in the low-voltage sector. A special acknowledgment to the Apprenticeship & Training Committee for their significant contribution. Contact your local Chapter Executive Director for course availability and additional details.
  • Achieved over 5% growth in our membership.
  • Established a new provisional chapter in Raleigh, NC, which, after two board meetings, is already showing promising growth.
  • Enhanced our annual SPARK event, resulting in a 37% surge in attendees compared to 2022 and featuring 103 exhibitors, including 47 new vendors.
  • Set a record with 30 apprentices competing in the Apprentice of the Year (AOY) competition.
  • Welcomed new Industry Partners like Generac and United Rentals. Additionally, IEC gained three new Power Sponsors – ChargePoint, Ring, and Talent Corps – along with four new Circuit Sponsors – Rho, Rivet Work, Remarcable, and Klein Tools.
  • Successfully collaborated with other industry associations to ensure that all new electrical technologies remain under the electrical umbrella for permitting and apprenticeship.
  • Structured a new agreement to relocate our Washington office to a more efficient space.
The list goes on and on! We have a packed agenda for 2024, and I’m confident that our association will continue to grow in the right direction.

DOL Announces Proposed Changes to Registered Apprenticeship

Earlier this month the U.S. Department of Labor published a proposed rule to overhaul the registered apprenticeship system. DOL claims the proposed rule will modernize and standardize the requirements training programs must meet to receive the “registered apprenticeship” label and improve the agency’s collection of apprenticeship performance data. Among other changes, DOL proposed a new model of apprenticeships targeted at high school and community college students called a “registered career and technical education apprenticeship.” A webinar to discuss the potential changes is scheduled for January 11, 2024. IEC will be reviewing and providing comments to DOL on the proposed rule, which are due in mid-February.

Triangle IEC

It is an exciting time for the IEC as we continue to see growth in developing new chapters. We are very proud to introduce our newest startup chapter ,Triangle IEC, which is in the Raleigh – Durham, NC area. The word “Triangle” is very important to that geographic area and many businesses are known and, in some way, represent “Triangle”, much like “Mid-South IEC”, “IEC Rocky Mountain” or “IEC of the Bluegrass” in their respective areas. Here’s some information about the Triangle area as well as here.

The founding Board Members are (left to right)

Several of the board members are planning to attend the upcoming Business Summitt so when you have a chance to meet them, please give them a warm IEC welcome!
